Recently one of the Moms was offered a paid blogging gig and asked the group how much money they make blogging for pay. You could almost hear the hush in the virtual room.
“Um, my husband has a really big penis” offered up one uncomfortable mother.
Another said, “I think that the holy trinity is a farce!”
Someone tried talking politics but they were all Democrats so it failed miserably.
Oh they were so hopeful that the conversation would end there, but then I had to go and point out This Gawker Rant.
Here’s the reality of it all. Is blogging a viable business? According to Dooce it is but, to be fair, she lives in a flyover state and drives a Honda Civic, she’s also a two person gig, her husband is in on it. After the uncomfortable twittering subsided it was determined that blog posts range in payment from $10 to $50 and magazines underpay people terribly but is much more viable. Authors are making better money and blogging isn’t likely to get you a book deal but it doesn’t hurt either.
I blog because I can. I’ve got stuff to say and y’all seem to want to listen. I enjoy the sparring of a good comment stream and with some sites there is a revenue stream. Not much but every so often there’s been more than I expected.
But cyber-begging, that’s a whole other issue.

Yeah, I gave up “monetizing” my blog a long time ago…or so I say. I’m ever hopeful the Good Fairy will discover me but really, I do it because I like it. Which is, it seems to me, the absolutely therapeutically-correct reason for doing anything.
